Women: facing HIV
in our wider Europe

Promoting community-based approaches

Paris, France - October 6-8, 2005

European Seminar :  1st annoucement

Context :

In our European Continent, women represent a growing proportion of newly diagnosed HIV infections : from 27% in 1999 to almost 40% in 2003 (EuroHIV).  We know that women are more vulnerable than men with regards to HIV/AIDS due to biological specificities, as well as to socio-economical, cultural and legal factors.  Yet, all too often, little consideration is given to these specificities in the design of HIV/AIDS prevention, support, treatment and research programmes.  Many community-based initiatives undertaken by local NGOs in Europe have proven successful in identifying, addressing and advocating about these specificities.

Objective of the European Seminar :

This seminar is designed to promote the integration of established community-based methodologies to strengthen the work carried out on Women and HIV issues by local HIV/AIDS NGOs, especially in Central and Eastern Europe.

Draft Agenda :

Day 1: Update by European Experts on a selection of key issues

-  Introduction: HIV on the European continent : main trends / the situation of women

-  Women's Anatomy and Physiology:  back to basics – what makes women biologically vulnerable to  HIV?

-  Other factors of women's vulnerability (social / economical)

-  Prevention and Microbicides

-  Comprehensive care for women living with HIV (psychological, social, gynecological…)

-  Specificities of ARV treatment for women

-  What basic standards of reproductive health in relation to HIV should be universally accessible in Europe?

Day 2: What can local NGO do about it ?  An introduction to community-based methodologies.

- Small group workshops. Learning community-based approaches through practical work on a selection of projects brought by participants.
